Mombasa Governor, Hassan Joho, has undermined President Uhuru Kenyatta once again by telling Waitiki squatters not to pay the Sh 182,000.
On January 9th this year, President Kenyatta issued 5,007 leasehold titles, out of a total of 7,807, to the beneficiaries of the 903 acre Waitiki land.
In brokering the deal with the owner, Evanson Kamau Waitiki, in November 2015, the Government agreed to bail out the occupiers but required each beneficiary to pay Sh 1,000 monthly for 12 years to clear the Sh 182, 000
But speaking on Sunday at a rally at the Bomani grounds, Joho told Waitiki residents that it would be “unfair’’ for them to pay for the lease certificates while the national Government is writing off debts in other parts of the country.
“We saw that when the President went to Meru he gave Sh 1 billion to the miraa farmers to boost their business.”
“Recently he visited Central Kenya and wrote off Sh 2 billion in debts owed by coffee farmers,” Joho said.
Joho lamented that when the President and his deputy come to the Coast region, it is termed a “meet the people tour” but in their backyards it is a “development tour”.
He said Uhuru should stop treating Coastal residents as second class citizens.
