Staff at the Migori County Referral Hospital Mortuary have been facilitating with aggrieved families to smuggle corpses out of the mortuary at only sh 50 to avoid paying the full mortuary fee.
Governor Okoth Odabo has exposed the incidence stating that the practice is leaking county money.
The governor was speaking at the hospital where he distributed medicine and other medical equipment. He vowed to evict suspected staff behind the smuggling of corpses and selling hospital medicine to Tanzania.
In an investigative report by the Daily Nation, it was revealed that medical workers in the county were exploiting the porous border to smuggle drugs to private clinics in Tanzania.
The drug smuggling racket has left the county grappling with a consistent drug shortage even as the county maintains a high malaria prevalence rate of 38 per cent.
