Garbage from the morgue is dreaded at the Dandora dump-site, but at times comes with ‘valuables’ that find their way to the market. Victor Otieno, a youth who lives off the dumpsite says garbage trucks from the city mortuary and those from some city hospitals are feared.
“Sometimes they come with horrifying waste. You can bump on a foetus, amputated Arms toes, ears or other body parts,” says Otieno.
He admits that for some, it takes more than sober mind to rummage through such filth.
“People get clothes from the waste from mortuary and hospitals. Some tattered, bloody but others fit to wear. They belong to the gone, but people wash them before either selling or wearing them,” says Otieno.
The ‘kings’ of the dumpsite buy the truck-full waste for as little as Sh3,000 and then hire youths to rummage for the valuables which they later sell for over Sh10,000.
So beware you might be wearing a dead-mans t-shirt or trouser!
