Former president Mwai Kibaki’s family is once again in the limelight after the death of his wife – Lucy Kibaki.

Did the former head of state have another wife apart from Lucy? That is the question that many are still asking themselves.

Kibaki made it clear in March 2009. He called a press conference at State House to specifically put the issue to rest. He announced that he only had one wife – Lucy Kibaki.

However, some Kenyans were not satisfied with the answer and another question popped up – who is Mary Wambui to Kibaki?

“I lost my friend and you know how far we came with her, we are saying ‘pole’ for our former President Kibaki, we have lost our mother and we will stand with the family during this hard time,” said Mary Wambui

Mary Wambui, who succeeded Kibaki as the Othaya MP after his retirement, has been in several occasions linked to the former president’s family.

Wambui also reignited the talk after she referred to Kibaki as her family member during the burial ceremony of her sister in November 2015.

So, how did she get to be associated with the Kibaki and his family?

“Immediately Kibaki assumed power, Wambui, who the media said was a Narc activist, was assigned bodyguards, chase cars and other trappings of a presidential spouse… and acted as the de facto Othaya MP as the President concentrated on national matters,” published the Daily Nation on April 28.

Kibaki and Wambui are said to have met when she was working in the Kanu office in Othaya in 1974. He had just moved his power base from then Bahati constituency in Nairobi to his rural home in Nyeri, the paper reported.

In 1978, the then president Daniel Moi appointed Kibaki as vice president; Kibaki also appointed Wambui as manager of his Rware Farm in Naromoru.

From that point, her life changed for the better – some of her colleagues told the paper. She moved from Mumbi Estate to a better one – Ring Road Estate.

According to Daily Nation, when Kibaki won the 2002 presidential elections, Wambui moved to Lavington Estate in Nairobi after buying a house from a former South African diplomat. Both her houses were guarded by police officers.

This special relationship is what raised eyebrows on whether Kibaki indeed had only one wife – Lucy Kibaki.
