At least two people lost their lives on Wednesday, August 9, following a battle between anti-riot police officers and youth in Mathare.
They were among hundreds who had barricaded Juja road in Nairobi as they protested against the Independent Electoral and Electoral Commission (IEBC) provisional presidential results.
One of the casualty attacked an officer with a crude knife which provoked other officers to intervene.
It is said the victim was accidentally hit on the head in the melee but it is not clear how the second death happened. Police said they could not ascertain if he was hit by one of them.
According to them, the victim had a deep cut on his head an indication he was hit by a blunt object but residents claim they picked a live bullet from the scene.
Although the mainstream media opted out of the development, we have learnt that the youths engaged police in running battles for the better part of the day.
They also openly pelted stones at PSV vehicles and even robbed passengers at some point.
Residents walking in the streets were also not spared as the youth took advantage of the situation to rob them in the open.
The officers who were forced to unblock the road severally, managed to surrounded the youth but they sneaked to nearby slum to hide.
