Legendary Congolese artiste Papa Wemba – real name, Jules Shungu Wembadio Pene Kikumba – has reportedly passed away, according to NBS Television.
The ‘Show Me The Way’ hitmaker was performing at the Festival des Musiques Urbaines d’Anoumabo (FEMUA) – in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. He is one of the most popular and celebrated African stars.
Papa Wemba who was only 66 years old, passed out and slumped to the ground on stage, which shocked his fans and crew at the #FEMUA9.
Unconfirmed reports also indicate that he collapsed after suffering a cardiac arrest, in Abidjan. He was best known for songs like Yolele, Show Me The Way, Mwasi and many more.
This is a great loss for Africa and the rumba industry, his legacy will leave on. Condolences to his family and friends.
French broadcaster France 24 has confirmed the death, quoting his manager.
Photos shared widely on social media show the music star being attended to by medical staff moments after he collapsed.
