More than 130 contestants took part in the 66th edition of the Miss World pageant. Although she did not win, Miss World Kenya 2016 Evelyn Njambi managed to make it to the top five together with Miss Philippines Catriona Elisa Gray, 19-year-old Stephanie Del Valle of Puerto Rico who was crowned Miss World, Yaritza Miguelina Reyes Ramirez of the Dominican Republic and Natasha Mannuela from Indonesia who were crowned 1st and 2nd Runner Up respectively.
While the 23-year-old interior design student at Maseno University may not have brought home the Miss World crown, Evelyn stands as the new Miss World Africa. She joins Kevin Owiti, also Kenyan, who was recently crowned Mr. Africa.
Evelyn will go down in history as the beauty queen who had the least time to prepare for a Miss World pageant, following the dethroning of former Miss Kenya, Roshanara Ebrahim in July.
At the Miss World global charity ball, Kenya couture designs got a chance to exclusively feature their dresses which were strutted during the Miss World competition. “It is a great honour for Kenya to have been invited to dress the Miss World contestants, which creates an opportunity for us to develop a vibrant and sustainable fashion industry whilst also building Brand Kenya,” said Julie Gichuru.
