Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe was left visibly shocked after Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe started sleeping during a joint press conference that the two heads of state held in Japan’s capital Tokyo.
In a video clip by Reuters, Africa’s longest-serving ruler Mugabe was seen dozing off while standing, as Abe gave an address in Japanese.
In subsequent scenes of the video, while a translator seemed to be reading out the address in English, Japan’s PM could be seen glancing at a dozing Mugabe in apparent shock.
The two later shook hands after the press briefing, and each walked out of the podium, with Mugabe’s bodyguard quickly rushing behind the 92-year-old president to escort him to his seat.
