Flamboyant Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko on Tuesday made a pleasant surprise to the Kenyans women’s football team representing the country in Uganda.
Sonko was one of the few Kenyans who traveled to Uganda to watch Harambee Starlets get head to head with Tanzania’s Twiga in a match that they lost 2-1.
Despite the loss, Sonko took time to console the team not just with words of encouragement but also with a cash donation.
“My intention when coming here was to join you in celebrating our win. But despite the loss, I still feel we are winners. I am told Tanzania’s goal winning goal was a stolen one… but we will still celebrate,” the senator told the Kenyan team.
He then called the team captain and handed her Sh100,000 cash token for their motivation and promised them more goodies once they return to Kenya.
The team was visibly excited by the kind gesture and invited the Sonko to join them in the night celebrations.
The Starlets who were accompanied by FKF head Nick Mwendwa jetted back to the country on Wednesday to a heroic welcome at JKIA.
The girls were then driven on an open air truck to Ole Sereni Hotel where a reception had been organized in their honor.
