Anti-riot police were deployed to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission offices on Monday following a threat by Cord leaders that they will a stage sit-in to pile pressure on the officials to quit.
Nairobi County Police Commander Japheth Koome said Cord will not be allowed into the IEBC offices at Anniversary Towers.
Cord leaders led by had requested their supporters to stage sit-ins in all IEBC regional offices starting Monday to pile pressure on the commissioners to quit.
But IEBC in a statement wired to newsrooms said the move was uncalled for as it had engaged the Okoa Kenya secretariat on what to do after the signatures did not meet the one million constitutional minimum.
“The commission expects Cord and all citizens to uphold the rule of law as it demands the same of others. IEBC will not be manipulated or intimidated or succumb to pressure in the performance of its mandate,” reads the statement.
