In every event organized by the ODM you will not fail to notice one woman with a lot of oranges carefully strapped in her head. She is a staucnch follower of Raila Odinga and travels all the way to Nairobi from Suba West Sub County to attend ODM rallies.
Mama Rosa Akinyi popularly known as Mama Chungwa however lives in a rented house worth Sh. 1,000 a month which is covered with newspaper cuttings and Raila Odinga’s posters, with messages like ‘Vote for Raila Odinga’.
At 63 years,Mama Chungwa or ‘Siste’ as she is called, has met the former Prime Minister a few times and their meetings seem to bore no fruit to Mama Chungwa who is has no child since she cannot bare one.
A divorcee,Akinyi says that her husband kicked her out since she could not bear children and now she works as a farmhand and sometimes she is forced to rely on well-wishers for upkeep. Akinyi admitted that Raila only gave her Sh. 10,000 as fare back home.
Akinyi says that her support to the former prime minister started when he was at Ford-Kenya adding that even if Raila ditches ODM to form another party, she will gladly follow him.
During the 2013 general elections Akinyi fainted after Kibaki was announced as the winner. However, she could ditch ODM for Jubilee in the next year’s general election if Raila will not buy her a land and build her a house.
