Human Rights Activist John Waweru who was shot dead on Monday night at Zimmerman Estate could have been murdered by rival land gangs operating in Kiambu county.
Waweru who was a director at Githunguri Ranching Scheme company which is a land firm that owns much of the property in Kiambu was a main witness in a criminal case against a rival group opposed to the land firm’s management.
The deceased was also facing a criminal case and had been charged at the Thika law courts with forgery and theft of land belonging to one Boniface Kamau Njoroge. Waweru had denied the allegations and was released in January on a Sh100,000 bail or alternative Sh200,000 bond.
The activist was hit on the head with a blunt object before he was shot twice on the chest when dropping off one of his employees at her home in Zimmerman estate. He was then rushed to a clinic but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Police confirmed that nothing was stolen from the victims and that they had launched investigation into the murder.
