Ivan Okello a KDF soldier has married Maureen Mayengo a 21-year old survivor student of Garissa University College. Mayengo transferred to Moi University main campus in Eldoret and is always grateful to Okello who with other KDF soldiers stormed the dormitory she was in to rescue her and other students
Mayengo who hid herself in a closet for 12 hours inside her room during the terror attack survived while her close friend was shot.
Four months after the terrifying attack, Mayengo decided to marry the KDF soldier in order to feel secure.
“I resolved to marry him after the attack,” said Mayengo.
Mayengo said she saw in Okello a shield and defender even though she still has fear of the attack after losing her friend in the massacre.
Okello who has since been deployed to serve in Somalia in the war against AL-Shabaab has her wife Mayengo praying everyday that he may return safely so that they can have a grand wedding after her graduation.
Mayengo swears to never return to Garissa University as she is still traumatized by the loud shouts and screams of the dying students which still scare her.
“I will never step into that place,” Mayengo swears.
