Over the weekend of Saturday, May 27, a Tanzania party announced its support for Uhuru, branding National Super Alliance presidential candidate Raila Odinga a traitor. Freeman Mbowe, the Chairman of the Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (Chadema) (Party for Democracy and Progress) opposition party announced that the party had done an assessment and chose President Uhuru.
“Chadema is dismayed by Kenya’s opposition leader. We supported him during the 2012 elections in Kenya and to our surprise, when it came to the 2015 polls in Tanzania, he supported CCM candidate John Magufuli,” said Mbowe as quoted in the Daily Nation on Monday, May 29.
According to Mbowe, they chose Uhuru because he is the best candidate for a better democracy in Kenya. In their own terms, Raila is an enemy because he is a friend of Magufuli, also their enemy.
“We commend Uhuru for expanding democratic space during his term in office. Opposition leaders in Kenya haven’t been jailed,” added Mbowe. He was speaking during the party’s council meeting. It comes as a surprise that the party supports President Uhuru given Jubilee Party’s firm belief that Tanzania was part of plans by the opposition to interfere with the 2017 August poll in Kenya.
