Today Morning , hundreds of Mombasa residents aboard Kenya’s biggest ferry, the MV Nyayo, and stared death in the eye after it stalled and started drifting towards the deep seas.
The incident left thousands of commuters stranded and is said to have been because of mechanical problems which happened at 7am causing the vessel to float towards the high waters.
Efforts to somehow take the ferry back to the island initially proved futile and authorities were forced to bring in reinforcement.
According to an explanation by the Kenya Ferry Services, heavy rains that have hit the Coastal town led to increased water levels at sea.
“To all our customers, beware the sea is very rough, heavy currents experienced due to heavy rains. Landings are rough and tricky. Be vigilant”, the Kenya Ferry Services posted on Twitter.
Ferry services were suspended for three hours or until the tempest at sea quietens down, authorities warned. It was yet to resume at the time of going to press.
“Ferry services suspended until 10:00hrs due to high tides. Anticipate delays. Poleni mombasa people. 😢😢😢” A user warned on Twitter.
