Father Allois Cheruiyot Bett, the Catholic priest who was tragically shot dead in Elgeyo Marakwet County, will be buried on Friday, May 30.
The final burial location will be announced by the church in consultation with the bereaved family.
During a solemn requiem mass held at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral in Eldoret, Bishop Dominic Kimengich of the Eldoret Catholic Diocese expressed deep sorrow over Father Bett's death. He emphasized that the priest’s sacrifice should serve as a wake-up call and a possible turning point for achieving lasting peace in the conflict-hit Kerio Valley region.
Bishop Kimengich condemned the increasing disregard for human life and the rule of law in the country. “The government must act decisively to restore order. Allowing criminals to walk free only fuels a culture of impunity,” he stated.
Nandi Governor Stephen Sang echoed these sentiments, highlighting the long-standing neglect of Kerio Valley, which has become synonymous with insecurity and banditry. He urged the national government to prioritize restoring peace and security in the volatile area.
Father Bett, who served at St. Matthias Mulumba Tot Parish, was ambushed and shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Kabartile Village last week. His death shocked the community and reignited calls for stronger security interventions in the North Rift region.
According to the National Police Service (NPS), six suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder.
However, NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga clarified that the killing is not believed to be related to cattle rustling or the frequent banditry incidents in the area.
