An Australian man admitted to having "a bit to drink" and then climbed into a freight truck's undercarriage to catch a quick ride home.

The 43-year-old was lost, disheveled, and stranded approximately 400 kilometers (250 miles) from his intended stop when he eventually climbed out five hours later.

After discovering the man on the side of the road late last week, a Queensland police officer captured the essence of his situation in the video made available to the media.

"You had a big session, you've lost all control, and you've ended up here somehow trying to work your way back?" he asked.

"Pretty much," the stowaway replied, clad in a soiled blue shirt.

When the B-Double freight truck, which can weigh up to 50 tonnes, stopped in the picturesque seaside town of Nambucca Heads in the state of New South Wales, police said the "intoxicated" man got onto metal racks underneath it.

The truck stopped at a red light about forty minutes away in Coffs Harbour, and the unfortunate hitchhiker had planned to scramble out, according to police.

However, the plan was derailed when the truck drove through several green lights before stopping five hours north of Queensland to refuel.

"I'm really stressed out. I had a bit to drink," the man told police.

"I jumped in the undercarriage thinking he was going to stop in Coffs Harbour, and he got a green light the whole way through and never stopped until here."

The bemused police officer suggested it must have been a bumpy and uncomfortable ride.

"I didn't have to worry about the air con, there was a pretty breeze through there," the man replied.

"It was just stupidity to be honest with you."

According to Queensland police, the man's fine for riding in a "part of a motor vehicle not designed for passengers or goods" was Aus$288 (US$188).
