The nation in the Horn of Africa is now the eighth partner state in the bloc.
On December 15, 2023, in Entebbe, Uganda, President Sheikh Hassan Mohamud of Somalia and President Salva Kiir Mayardit, the Chairperson of the Summit of EAC Heads of State and President of South Sudan, signed the Treaty of Accession.
Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the president of Uganda, was present at the signing ceremony.
According to the EAC's new member admission procedure, Dr. Mathuki is anticipated to declare the Federal Republic of Somalia, a new member of the Community.

By Article 153(1) of the EAC Treaty, the Secretary-General shall notify Somalia in writing that the newly admitted member has deposited the Instrument of Ratification of the Treaty of Accession and is a full member of the Community.
The Treaty of Accession, which expresses the new member's commitment to be bound by its terms, will then be deposited by the Secretary-General with the African Union and the UN [Article 153(2) of the Treaty].
The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, and the Republic of Burundi comprise the remaining seven (7) Partner States.
