Leading the groundbreaking ceremonies this week for Seven Central Kitchens as part of the ongoing School Feeding Program, Dishi na County was Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja.

These kitchens represent the third stage of the project, which aims to provide hot, wholesome meals to schoolchildren throughout Nairobi. The Governor claims that after everything is finished, Nairobi's sub-counties will each have a central kitchen.

Dandora 1 Primary School (Embakasi East), Donholm Primary School (Embakasi North), Mutuini Primary School (Dagoretti South), Uhuru Gardens Primary School (Langata), Ndururuno Primary School (Starehe), Umoja 1 Primary School (Embakasi West), and Zawadi Primary School (Kamkunji) are the seven schools that have been chosen for phase three of the kitchens.

Governor Sakaja was present during one of the kitchens' groundbreaking ceremonies.

Six of these kitchens were groundbreaking on Tuesday, and the Kamkunji kitchen's final ceremony is scheduled to take place shortly.

When these kitchens are up and running, the Dishi Na County program is anticipated to reach a much wider audience, benefiting over 310,000 schoolchildren in Nairobi's public primary schools and Early Childhood Development Centers, up from the current 184,000.

The Nairobi County Government pays the remaining expenses; parents only need to contribute Ksh.5 per learner daily.

Governor Sakaja stated that school enrollment has increased due to the Dishi Na County initiative.

"The enrolment in public schools has gone up to over 310,000 kids from the initial 250,000 when we did the census and this can be attributed to the subsidized meal provided by the county at a cost of only Ksh.5," said the Governor while groundbreaking the Kitchen at Ndururuno Primary school.

The first meal was served on August 28, 2023, after the groundbreaking of ten central kitchens in June 2023 marked the official launch of the Dishi na County Program.

The operationalization of 10 central kitchens, which would guarantee that 184,000 students from 106 public schools received hot, wholesome meals, marked the start of the second phase in January 2024.
