President William Ruto has placed Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen under notice due to the nation's increasing number of traffic accidents.

President Ruto stated that the threat needs to be eliminated and the number of accident cases controlled during Wednesday's National Road Safety Action Plan 2024–2028 launch.

"I look forward to one year from now we will have another meeting and Kipchumba Murkomen you better come with results that the numbers are coming down otherwise you will be in a lot of trouble," he said during the event held at the Kenyatta International Conventional Centre (KICC).

"The numbers have not been coming down they have been going up every year. Waziri (CS) and your team the numbers have to come down."

To achieve road safety, the team can benchmark with other jurisdictions and use tested models, according to President Ruto, who also stated that the goal should be achievable.

He has also promised to resolve the nation's long-standing accident problem once and for all.

Murkomen claimed that he had been the target of angry Kenyans in the past due to accidents, and he maintained that drivers are ultimately to blame.

"We have a situation where when we have road accidents like we had a few grisly road accidents in the last one month... you have national outrage and everybody in the country is looking for somebody to blame and usually the target is the Cabinet Secretary," he said.

"The most important actor is the driver and the rider because that is the man or woman with the greatest control on whether or not they are going to sort out the problem of road accidents."

Murkomen continued that the strategic plan will onboard all participants to guarantee that everyone in the transportation industry is held accountable.
