To prevent more deaths from the ongoing floods, Kenyans have been urged to follow all safety instructions from the national and county governments, according to Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Roads and Transport Kipchumba Murkomen.

He made this statement while visiting Mai Mahiu, Naivasha Constituency, and confirmed that 45 people had died as a result of Monday morning's flash floods.

He therefore pleaded with Kenyans to heed any orders from the authorities, saying that the country could not afford to lose any more lives due to disobedience.

"With much respect I urge Kenyans this is not a joke anymore like the one we talk about on social media. These are the lives of people," he said.

"When we ask you to move to a particular place please move. When we tell you not to cross some roads, rivers and other places you have been warned to look out for kindly do so and help the nation to tame this crisis."

CS Murkomen went on to say that the federal government, along with other multi-agency teams, is prepared to collaborate with county governments in order to support the search and rescue efforts in the region as well as other impacted areas nationwide.

"Food items and water are on the way," he said.

As more infrastructure is damaged and rivers overflow their banks, the number of people killed by floods keeps rising.

Authorities had not yet released an official confirmation of the death toll at the time of publication.
