Part of the Embu-Meru highway has been closed after cracks developed in the Ikong'u bridge in Kiagima, Embu West sub-county, suspected to have been caused by the ongoing heavy rains.

The soil in one area of the busy bridge began to cave in, resulting in a breach that forced the route to be closed and traffic redirected.

Embu County Police Commander Nicholas Maina encouraged vehicles on the highway to follow traffic police advice for other routes.

Those traveling to Nairobi from Meru should detour at Kivwe Market through Muthatari before returning to the highway in Embu town. Those traveling to Meru should detour at Mutunduri via Manyatta, Kianjokoma, and back to the highway in Runyenjes.

Over 169 people have been confirmed dead from the ongoing heavy rains and flooding, while over 190,000 others have been displaced.
