Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has revealed intentions to convene a pivotal gathering aimed at addressing the prevailing discord among leaders from Kiambu County. Speaking at a church service in Kiambu on Sunday, where tensions among attendees were evident, Gachagua voiced his disappointment and urged for unity and cooperation among the local leaders.
Concerned by the public disputes, he underscored the importance of united efforts to promote the development of Kiambu, a region pivotal to national leadership owing to its substantial support in the 2022 elections. "I am greatly troubled by the division among our leaders. It is imperative that we collaborate for the advancement of our county," Gachagua stated. He pledged to arrange a meeting promptly to tackle and potentially resolve these concerns, urging the leaders to temper their political fervor.
The incident that triggered the Deputy President's response involved a verbal clash between National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wah and Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi. During the service, Ichung'wah criticized the governor, alleging that Kiambu, similar to Nairobi, was a leader in corruption. Ichung'wah defended his position by stating, "As parliamentarians, we are bound to demand accountability at both the national and county levels as mandated by our electorate."
In response, Governor Wamatangi defended his administration by pointing out that the criticisms were related to past administrations rather than his own. He questioned the applicability of such accusations to current leadership, suggesting that issues highlighted by the Auditor General pertained to former county executives.
In addition to his agenda for the week, Gachagua revealed that he had arranged an Intergovernmental Budget and Economic Council (IBEC) session at his Karen residence. The meeting will primarily address the nation's response to recent flooding challenges and will entail discussions with governors regarding diverse economic matters.
