Five police officers have lost their lives and eight others sustained injuries following an ambush by suspected Al-Shabaab militants in the Rakei area of Boni Forest, near Lamu County.
Lamu County Police Commissioner Wesley Koech confirmed that initial investigations suggest the attack involved more than 70 heavily armed militants.
The group is believed to have attempted to cross the Bodhei-Lamu border from Garissa, where they were intercepted by officers from the elite Special Operations Group (SOG).
The deadly encounter happened just 3 kilometers from Lamu town. The injured officers and the bodies of the fallen were swiftly airlifted to Nairobi for urgent medical attention and further procedures.
Commissioner Koech stated that the militants may have been planning to cross into Kenya to stage further terrorist attacks. He urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals or unusual activities in their communities to authorities immediately.
